A Self-Analytical Moment: Success and Background

I was just reading a magazine profile of a highly successful artist. She spent her entire childhood and youth in the most elite private schools. Then after graduating from Yale in 1991, she spent the early nineties "working with children from poor families."

"I just can't compete with this kind of person!" I was thinking. "Not only did she have a head start with all that schooling, but then she goes and does all this charity work!"

But then I realized: in the early nineties, I was a child from a poor family. So whoop-de-doo for her!!

And guess what? During college, I was employed at a daycare where I "worked with" children from rich families!! Poor people take care of rich people's kids so that rich people can "work with" poor people's kids!!!

I am officially no longer giving a shit about how I measure up to these people.
